Recently, we all spent an afternoon learning about and preparing food with Guilia and Marco. We were divided into shopping groups to go out and find ingredients in what Guilia calls “Italian shopping”, buying just a few ingredients for the day quickly in the shops just outside our door within the walls of the town. We all came back and started work in our lovely kitchen preparing and cooking. It became clear soon that some people who shall remain unidentified forgot to buy basil. Aya heroically sacrificed her personal basil plant to serve the greater good and made it possible to make the pesto for our meal.
After a lot of hard work we sat down to have some of the best fresh food you can get. Marco made a magnificent amatriciana and Guilia helped us make panzanella, which involved most notably soaking bread in water and confusing us thoroughly. In the end we ended up with large servings of spectacular food and wine. We all sat together to eat, drink, and laugh; having a lovely afternoon overall and learning a bit more about what it is to be Italian.
