Recently a majority of us in the program went to Cecina on the Mediterranean to spend some time cooling off and heating up in the sun. After a short bus ride we made it from Volterra to Cecina, and walked form the station to the coast. We ran across the scorching sand to set up a spot for our towels and beach mats, covered ourselves in sunscreen and jumped into the freezing sea. The water becomes deep much more quickly in the sea than the various beaches of North America we are used to, so you had to get used to the cold immediately! We spent time sunning, swimming, and enjoying drinks and food at the nearby shaded restaurants.
We stayed until the afternoon when we had to make the long walk back to the station alongside tall trees and beautiful houses. Along the way Aya managed to find a nice fan that she then tested at the station and took all the way home, making this quite the productive trip for her. Korzell tried his hardest to find a hat that said “Cecina” on it to add to his vast collection of branded hats but it seemed there weren’t any to find. We all managed to have a good time at the beach and simultaneously embrace and escape the blazing heat.
