During the trip, we (The UDM SOA Students) have had an opportunity to meet a ton of new and amazing people. One of these people is a gentle, humorous, and very talented man named Velio Grandoli. Velio is the SOA’s Alabaster professor and comedian. Although Velio only speaks in Italian his hand gestures and the tone of his voice allow him to speak and communicate with the SOA students in a way that does not need to be spoken. Aside from being an awesome professor and friend Velio is a very accomplished and talented Alabaster Master Sculptor/Artisan (Makes sense seeing as Velio is our professor). This roots back to Velio’s past and childhood. Velio has been working with Alabaster since he was about Six years old. His father was also an Alabaster Sculptor and taught both Velio and Pupo (Velio’s brother) the techniques and skills to become accomplished artisans. Pupo went on to become specialised in Animals and forms in motion, whereas Velio had the opportunity to learn a multitude of specialisations creating a Jack of All Trades.
Below are some examples of Velio’s work and picture from his personal Studio.
